ZoomInfo began life as a business contact source, evolving quickly into an all-purpose business information search engine. ZoomInfo spiders millions of business, corporate, financial, news, and similar sites looking for names and business data points, then assembles it into profiles.

Unlike its closest competitor, Hoover's, which uses human editors to review and compile business profiles, ZoomInfo's data is computer-generated, similar to what a standard search engine might turn up. That makes ZoomInfo's information more current, but it can also lead to the occasional erroneous item or extraneous entry. Even so, it's faster than using a search engine.

The free search, limited in depth and flexibility, is handy for a quick lookup. But ZoomInfo really shines when users step up to its premium PowerSearch service. Using this subscription service, recruiters can source candidates by title, company size, geography, industry, education, experience, and more than a dozen other characteristics. What results is a list of every person in the company's database of almost 40 million people that fits all the criteria.

The additional tools ZoomInfo includes as part of PowerSearch includes an email campaign and management service, and the ability to export the candidate list into an ATS, CRM, or other formats. Business researchers use this product to do the same kind of searching to keep tabs on competitors, gather intelligence, and put together org charts.

According to Nielson/NetRatings, in April 2007 ZoomInfo was the fastest growing network in the country, with 276% annual growth. More than 4.5 million people search www.ZoomInfo.com every month. In addition, nearly 2,500 customers, including Yahoo!, Microsoft, Oracle, PepsiCo and 20% of the Fortune 500, use ZoomInfo’s patented search tools.

ZoomInfo is profitable and raised $7 million from Flagship Ventures, Venrock Associates, and Vulcan Capital a few years ago, but it has no plans to seek more VC investment.
