When it comes to household names in the HR field, none rival the brand recognition of Wonderlic, the 12-minute test of cognitive ability, or general intelligence, which has been taken by more than 125 million people since 1937. The test is used to assess ability to learn and adapt to a job.
The test became well-known during the second World War, when it was administered by the U. S. Navy to candidates for pilot training and navigation.
The Wonderlic brand really took off after Tom Landry began using it to assess the ability of his players to learn the Dallas Cowboys playbook. Now, thanks to the NFL Combine, which has used the Wonderlic Personnel Test for more than 30 years as part of its draft selection process, player scores are regularly assessed and discussed by fans. (The typical offensive tackle supposedly scores 26; a halfback only 16; and the brains of a team, the QB, scores 24.)
The company, still family owned and operated, has grown and expanded its offerings, including an updated (2007) version of the grandaddy test itself.
