Don't let the name VisualCV throw you. This is not yet another video resume product to be ignored. VisualCV is a clever integration of the traditional resume with 21st century technology.
Recruiters will like the fact that a VisualCV includes all the standard resume information in a format that fits their comfort zone. But it goes a few steps further. VisualCVs allow the incoporation of video, pdfs, charts, PowerPoints, links, pop-up info boxes and the like.
Say you're gunning for a sales director job and you've reviewed more than one resume that says: "Led the company in sales growth, exceeding quota... " Impressive enough. Then you come across a VisualCV includes a chart showing your candidate's sales vs. each of the other regions? Now that really pops.
The utility of a Visual CV is obvious for people in the creative areas, where a portfolio or work samples can be decisive in landing an interview.
Companies, too, can do the same thing, creating their own VisualCVs to help sell candidates. They can also use VisualCV to ask candidates to post work samples securely.
The one hook we see in the process is that VisualCV's don't seem to be mailable, the way a typical resume is. And we don't know if or to what extent it can be imported into an ATS.
But the company is in beta and is still finessing both the the product, and the business model. Later in 2008, the company intends to start charging employers for sertain features.
The company, which raised $5 million in startup capital from Heidrick & Struggles and Valhalla Partner, launched in February 2008. It's co-founders, Clint Heiden and Phillip Merrick have been executives, entrepreneurs, and job-seekers.
Merrick was co-founder of webMethods, a $200 million a year technology and software services firm. Heiden was last CEO of an executive recruiting firm that bears his name.
