Before "going postal" entered the vernacular, USIS was already helping the government root out potential misfits from the employment pool. The company began in the 19th Century as the Office of Federal Investigations in the U.S. Office of Personnel Management. Its job was to vett the "background, suitability, and loyalty of Federal employees and applicants." A century later in 1996, as part of the privatization of some government functions, the investigations unit was spun off as an employee-owned company.
While today the firm's primary clients are still government agencies, USIS also offers background and drug screening for private companies and is considered one of the largest and key investigative agencies for the HR industry handling more than 2 million cases a year. Its operations center is located 200 feet underground in a mine that once held sensitive federal government records.
