With some 9,000 clients, including three-fourths of the Fortune 500, TALX is one of the largest providers of payroll services in the U.S. Its business is focusedin three areas: hiring, pay reporting and compliance.
Hiring services include assessments and talent management, paperless new hires, and tax credits and incentives. Pay reporting services include electronic time tracking, paperless pay, and W-2 management. Compliance services include employment and income verifications through The Work Number, unemployment tax management, and I-9 management.
Founded in 1973 as Interface Technology, Inc., the company became TALX in 1990 and went public six years later. Early in the dotcom boom TALX began offering its services over the Internet, surviving and even growing when it turned bust.
By 2006 the company was on its way to doing a quarter of a billion dollars in business year, with a large portion of it coming from its employment and income verification business. The service, branded as The Work Number, is used to verify employee income and proving employment. Recruiters use it as part of their pre-employment screening. That year the company bought Performance Assessment Networks adding testing to its pre-employment services.
In 2007 TALX was acquired by Equifax, the consumer credit agency, for about $1.4 billion in cash, stock and debt transaction.
