Taleo builds Web-based talent-management software that manages recruiting, resumes, employee screening, and performance management. It is so good at doing that it has become one of the top HR software vendors in the marketplace. And with the May 2008 acquisition of privately held Vurv, Taleo might rightfully claim to be the largest, at least so far as customers and installations.

In August 2007, popular online publication The Motley Fool pointed out that while many people can name industry leader Salesforce as the number one independent on-demand software operator, few people can name number two - Taleo. However, the "company has been delighting shareholders and growing its business at a healthy clip."

Now, when Vurv's 1,700 customers are brought on board, Taleo might even threaten Salesforce for the No. 1 position.

The company's product helps manage staffing processes for professional, hourly, and temporary employees and its iLogos Research division includes both research and consulting to help corporations analyze the financial impact of staffing management decisions. Customers include Hewlett-Packard, Procter & Gamble, and Starbucks.

In addition to building out the Taleo software to meet market changes, the company has also followed an aggressive partnership and acquisition course. In 2003, Taleo acquired White Amber, temporary workforce management software. In 2005, the company purchased Recruitforce.com for its offerings to small and medium businesses. In 2007, Taleo acquired the assets of JobFlash, a five-year-old company that helped employers interact with the broadest pool of job seekers through multilingual telephone interactive voice response and interview scheduling. It also purchased the recruitment software division of WetFeet in 2007. Partnerships in 2007 included Paychex and AIRS.

The Vurv acquisition cost will come in about $125 million, most of which is in the form of 4.1 million shares of Taleo stock, which is trading at $19.59 a share when this was written on June 27. Taleo will also pay about $36.5 million in cash and assume up to $9 million of debt and unvested employee stock options woth an undisclosed amount.
