One of the three leading job aggregation sites, SimplyHired was second out of the gate, but first in the PR arena. It scored a huge coup in April 2006 when the company got $3.5 million in funding from Fox Interactive, plus a presence on the Fox family of sites, including MySpace. Another $10 million came in from Foundation Capital.
But PR doesn't translate into success. The site got a big traffic boost when it finally launched on MySpace, overtaking Indeed for a short while, before settling back into a distant second place.
SimplyHired has also seen a good deal of turnover among its top executives; nothing unusual there for a company headquatered in the heart of Silicon Valley, but it does present challenges to continuity and business development.
The business concept is straightforward: SimplyHired searches employer career sites and free and paid job boards for listings. It indexes them, compiling them in a single searchable database. Jobseekers save time by searching only site rather than many and employers benefit from the additional distribution their listings get.
Employers can send SimplyHired a feed of their listings or ask to be included in the index. There's no charge for this. Where the money comes from is from selling premium positioning and keywords, all on a pay-per-click basis. Is that enough to build a profitable business on? Probably not.
SimplyHired, like competitor Indeed.com, has been adding off-site distribution points through its clever Job-a-Matic, a hosted website that can present targted listings or serve as a sort of job-board-in-a-box.
The Fox partnership, though, gives SimplyHired access to some of the most desirable demographics on the Web. Stay tuned to see if it can capitalize on it.
