One of the SilkRoad Equity holdings, SilkRoad technology is principally an HR solutions company that also offers products like Eprise, an enterprise content management system and other solutions. This product mix is a legacy of divine, inc., a technology conglomerate assembled by billionaire entrepreneur Andrew “Flip" Filipowski, CEO of the equity company, which he largely owns. The bankruptcy of divine (spelled with a small "d") in 2003 was followed by the founding of SilkRoad Equity that same year and the acquisition of some of divine's holdings.

The name SilkRoad, therefore, seems apt, considering that the historic Silk Road linking the far east with Europe was fraught with perils, but handsomely rewarded those brave enough and lucky enough to make the roundtrip. (Think Marco Polo.)

SilkRoad technology - yes, it is spelled with a lower case t - offers a variety of HR talent management products lead by its widely known ATS OpenHire, which it acquired from Outtask, Inc. in 2004. Four more HR products offered, collectively making up what the company calls its Life Suite. Its client base of 2,000 (all products) includes Urban Outfitters and FTD, the florist company.

Products & Services

  • OpenHire

A well regarded over the Web ATS that is provided as a Software-as-a-Service product. A 2005 ERE survey of users rated OpenHire above the average of its peers and above the average of all systems for performance, functionality and vendor service. In nearly every aspect of ATS functionality - things like requisition templates and handling, candidate self-service, personalized CRM and the like - the OpenHire system scored above the other systems in the survey. The typical deal in 2005 ran $40,000 with the majority of clients having under 2,500 employees.
  • RedCarpet

What should you do when that first rate prospect accepts your job offer? Roll out the red carpet, of course. That's the connection the company wants you to make with its onboarding product, which it brands as a life events solution, a reference to the inclusion of offboarding capabilities. While it handles the routine details of promotions, leaves, transfers and similar status changes, RedCarpet does more than get the paperwork done. It helps new workers become familiar with the company culture by helping them get to know something about the people in their new department or location. It also sends reminders to others involved in the onboarding to make sure things like business cards are ordered and an office is ready for the hire.
  • WingSpan

A full-featured performance management solution that integrates with existing systems and with the other SilkRoad technology. It incorporates multi-rater assessments, competency and skill management, development planning, goal-setting and performance planning, performance and appraisal reviews, and career development with succession planning.
  • GreenLight

Compensation management system that ties into HRIS and performance management.
  • Eprise

SilkRoad now markets Eprise as an HR communications tool for an employee intranet. It's available as Software-as-a-Service, so there's no involving IT and its system of permissions allows dispersed or centralized content authoring. As needs grow, an enterprise version is available for licensing.
