Once upon a time, PeopleSoft was an HR systems software company. It was born of an idea that HR application software didn't have to be run on giant mainframe computers but could be designed for the developing PC market.

Since the founders came from an HR software company, PeopleSoft's first product was an HRMS. In 1989, the little company had $1.9 million in sales. The next year it sold $6.1 million. And it grew and grew, launching a financial management system and then others. By 2005, when it was finally acquired by its chief competitor Oracle after a bitter battle, the company was bringing in close to $3 billion a year.

Today, PeopleSoft still ranks as one of the top HRMS applications in the world, based on number of clients and users. Its powerful technology is used by most of the largest companies in the world, though many medium-sized companies have embraced Oracle's technology in other areas, adding PeopleSoft to the mix as their HR needs grew. This is especially common in healthcare, academia, and companies with multiple locations. Nevertheless, PeopleSoft is not a product for the masses. It's a powerful tool that can manage, track, and report on every component of a company's human capital, from req to death. Interacting with the company's business systems and financial reports, PeopleSoft can provide data on ROI virtually every step of the way, helping a company identify weaknesses and trends before they become trends or weaknesses. This power doesn't come cheap or easy. But it offers so many benefits that PeopleSoft is one of the most widely used HRMS and HR intelligence systems in the world. Its chief remaining competitor for the high-end market is SAP.
