It's hard to know which is the better known brand: Shally Steckerl or the consulting company he founded, Job Machine. Our money is on the founder.
In the 10 years since Job Machine was launched it has become one of the best and most widely known consulting and training companies for sourcers in the U.S. if not the world. Its founder, however, has achieved the kind of one name recognition normally reserved for rock stars and Hollywood celebs.
Shally (anything else would be pretentious) and his equally capable if less visible partner Glenn Gutmacher teach recruiters how to find anybody. For most recruiters, that alone would be worth the price of admission, but Job Machine's training goes beyond locating Judge Crater. Shally and Glenn help with the next step, qualifying the prospect and encouraging them to become a candidate.
The principals, principally Shally, conduct countless public workshops at conferences throughout the year. But its the private workshops that Job Machine conducts for clients that have helped cement the company's reputation.
Through these workshops and seminars, Job Machine teaches recruiters how to use the Internet to source top, passive candidates for hard-to-fill jobs. The firm also consults with senior recruiting and HR executives to help them develop and implement a comprehensive recruiting strategy.
Individual recruiters and small shops can get a lot of the same kind of training via the online training programs that Gutmacher oversees. In addition, there are the famous "CheatSheets" providing search strings and tips to get a tough search going, and books for sale.
In the spring of 2008 Job Machine merged with Arbita, a job posting andadvertising service firm. Steckerl became an Arbita executive vice president, while maintaing Job Machine as a separate company and brand, but under Arbita. Gutmacher jbecame vice president of Arbita Consulting and Education Services.
