If Indeed wasn't the first of the metasearch job sites - the now departed WorkZoo may have the rights to that distinction - it was the first to launch and endure.
Founded by Paul Forster and Rony Kahan, who previously founded JobsInTheMoney.com then sold it to Financial News before it was acquired by Dice, Indeed is a jobs aggregator that scours the web for listings, indexes them and presents them in a single database. Instead of searching multiple sites for jobs, jobseekers search Indeed once to find the listings currently online.
Of the three leading jobs aggregation sites, Indeed has the most traffic with some 5 million unique visitors each month. They not only search for jobs, but they can set RSS feeds which send matching new jobs directly to a newsreader or get email notices. The company also offers a host of widgets allowing jobseekers to conduct searches from browsers or to post jobs of their choice onto their Facebook pages.
Publishers, bloggers and others can participate in an affiliate program earning money when employers buy premium postings via links on those sites. (Jobs can always be posted free.) By encouraging bloggers and others to enhance their sites by incorporating relevant job listings, Indeed is making efforts to reach a passive jobseeker market.
Funded by The New York Times Company, Allen & Company and Union Square Ventures. Indeed makes it money by selling premium positioning and pay per click recruitment advertising. The founders don't disclose revenue, but it is probably safe to say that among the job aggregation sites, Indeed is the closest to profitability.
