Harcourt Assessment, today part of Pearson, has a venerable history, its name harkening back to publisher Harcourt Brace & Company and its roots in the World Book Company founded in 1905.
The company offers testing services for educators, clinicians, and employers in a wide range of occupations. Talent assessment tests are available to determine candidate skills, knowledge, cultural fit, personality, and other aspects of their makeup relevant to the workplace. There are generic tests and others specific to the industry or position.
Besides candidate assessments, Harcourt also has a range of tests to assess the competencies and development and promotional potential of existing employees. The company has been struggling the last few years. When it was owned by mega-publisher Reed Elsevier Group, it laid off almost 200 employees or about 15 percent of its workforce. In May 2007, it was sold to Pearson as part of a $950 million deal that included some international units of Harcourt Education.
