Parent company GIS (General Information Services) was founded in 1966, one of the two original providers of nationwide background investigations. By 2005 the company was responding to clients requests to provide a total package that managed and track all functions involved with acquiring and retaining talent, hence the launch of Pangea People Management.

Backrgound checks are still the major part of the GIS business; Pangea's software solution is growing, but it has a small slice of the total market for talent management systems.

In both 2006 and 2007, HRO Today named GIS one of the top workplace solutions available; one of the 13 most progressive vendors. The publication cites the company's wide scope of services, the "thousands of companies across the globe, ranging from small businesses to Fortune 500 firms," and listing as the most important metric that "GIS focuses on turnaround times, robust reporting, full customization and integration capabilities, and customer care."

The company's growth has been impressive enough that Raymond Conrad, owner and CEO was awarded a Ernst & Young Entrepreneur Of The Year 2007 for the Carolinas region.
