Dice Holdings is the parent company for high-tech recruiting site Dice.com and for four other specialty job boards, including a Dice look-alike in India called CyberMedia Dice. Though its name comes from its 1991 origins as Data Processing Independent Consultants Exchange, a dial-up jobs bulletin board for techies in the San Francisco area, the other definition of the acronym may seem equally as apt to investors. After a long slide into bankrutpcy that followed the tech slump of 2001, Dice went private, restructured, and rose from the ashes. By 2004, it was healthy enough to begin acquiring other sites. ClearanceJobs.com was the first, followed by Targeted Job Fairs, and in 2006, acquired eFinancialCareers and JobsintheMoney. In 2007, despite jitters about the economy, the investment companies that owned Dice Holdings took it public, raising $217 million at $13 a share. Those who rolled the dice (we couldn't resist that one) saw the stock rise briefly before sinking to around $10 toward the end of 2007.

While Dice as a stock may be a gamble, recruiters will find its high-tech site one of the two or three "must buys." The site ranks in the top-20 of employment sites getting a million or so unique visitors a month. And it has 400,000 computer engineering and technical resumes. Then there are the smaller, but still well-trafficked job sites for financial professionals and those with U.S. secruity clearances.
