To our great disappointment, this is not the kind of job board where fired Detroit Lion's coach Rod Marinelli will be looking for his next job. Those kinds of job boards seem to exist only outside the U.S.

Career Athletes is, however, the place for companies wanting to hire college athletes for more typical jobs, such as in sales, marketing, engineering, and the like. It is the product of the 2008 merger between Career Athletes and Athletes4hire.com

Career Athletes LLC operates a job board, a search firm and provides locally labeled networking sites to college athletic departments for their students and alums.

The focus of the branded networking-oriented sites is on community, and a site might include alums of a particular sport mentoring current athletes, college sports news and similar types of content. There's also a job board, supplemented by a resume-like database of the college's athletes, which, over time, grows to be quite extensive.

What sets Career Athletes apart is the company's campus-based orientation for the athletes. "We've done over 800 on-campus presentations," company CEO Chris Smith says. "We are hands-on with the athletic department." These presentations, made to the athletes, include on-the-spot sign-ups for the site, ensuring their participation and availability to recruiters.

Thus the white-labeled networking sites for college athletic departments and the support of college coaches and athletic directors helps ensure participation from a school's student athletes.

Jobs are posted to the individual college sites and to a nationally available job board. Only registered users get to search the job board.

The business model is a blend of typical self-service postings (must register to get pricing) and sponsorships and branding programs. Career Athletes encourages an employer's holistic approach to the college athlete market, offering sponsorships of one or more college white-labeled community sites, presence at college job fairs, exclusive access to the resumes and other services. These are not delineated on the site, but are discussed in the posted company brochure.

The company also operates a search firm placing entry-level and especially athlete-alums with companies seeking employees with the sense of teamwork, competitiveness and results that marks competitive sports.

Competitive Resources Group recruits, polishes and mentors college athletes for placement with client firms.
