If, as Peter Weddle once offhandedly guessed, there are 40,000 (now upped to more than 60,000) job boards in existence, Beyond.com powers or flat-out owns a quarter of them. The company's flagship site, Beyond.com, is first only to the original site, PhillyJobs.com. But, like every site that is part of the network, each offers complete access to all the jobs in the 15,000 and counting sites in the Beyond family. Many, perhaps a majority, have little traffic and originate few jobs. Yet, the sheer weight of the sites in the network has catapulted Beyond into the ranks of the top 10 job sites in traffic. It's also driving the company's revenue growth, which, according to Inc. magazine, was under $1 million in 2003. In March 2007, Beyond.com raised $13.5 million in Series A financing from Safeguard Scientifics. Later in the year, it acquired it first non-U.S. presence when it bought JobAnimal.com, Inc. and its 800-site Canadian job network. Oh yes, it also provides turnkey job boards both for free and for a fee.
