Who would know better than a college student what it's like looking for a job after college? So who better than a college student to found a business to help college and grad students and recent alums find a job? That's pretty much how Roberto Angulo came to start AfterCollege when he was a junior at Stanford University, a hotbed of Internet entrepreneurship.

From a single site - AfterCollege.com - the company today is a career network specializing in recruitment at the college and alumni level. It works directly with academic departments and student groups at some 2,100 of the 4,100 U.S. colleges. Through these partners, job openings are advertised and resumes collected.

It also maintains a proprietary database of over 19,000 faculty and student group contacts. AfterCollege can deliver targeted employer content to a diverse audience of students, offering them mostly entry-level jobs.

The company's partnerships include targeted fields such as healthcare space in which it has partnerships with 39 state student nursing associations and over 1,500 schools of nursing, law enforcement, government and teaching. The company also has key partnerships with firms such as Bernard Hodes, Adicio and CareerBuilder.

According to web site thealarmclock.com, the company, which was funded through angel investment, started earning revenue in 2001 and became cash-flow positive in 2002. AfterCollege also says it has been growing at an average rate of 75 percent per year.

  • AfterCollege Launches Service to Connect Students and Employers (AfterCollege)

AfterCollege has launched "Answers," a social recruiting tool that taps into employers' existing human capital to bridge relationships between companies and college students. The tool was designed as a recessionary recruiting service to mobilize people within companies to begin a mutually beneficial dialogue with students.

"Answers" allows employees at any company to locate their school on AfterCollege. They are then asked to join their relevant department or group career network and to update their profile with their current employer. With their identity established, employees can begin answering questions posed by students within their career network. College students often have job search questions but limited resources to get those answers. The tool provides a private, user-friendly forum for these queries.
