Automatic Data Processing, Inc., or ADP as it's better known, got into the recruitment services business in 2006 when it acquired ATS vendor VirtualEdge.

A scrappy up-and-comer, VirtualEdge had a feature-rich ATS for the mid-sized and larger employer. It was a top tier firm with a client list that included such gold-plated customers as Agilent Technologies, Avery Dennison and Campbell Soup Company. ADP, which had formed a pre-employment business unit and had Odyssey, an hourly employee product, was looking to round out its offerings when it announced the acquisition of VirtualEdge in Oct. 2006.

At the time, ERE spoke with Rick Fletcher, president of HRchitect, who had this to say about the deal:

"This is arguably one of the top-five products on the market. ADP has a great sales team, but what they do not have are domain experts. VirtualEdge brings to them a large group of domain experts who understand recruiting. They bought a great think-tank of an organization that truly understands recruiting"

Rather than swallow up the company into the bureaucracy, ADP wisely maintained it as a subsidiary retaining the VirtualEdge brand.

Now, ADP is incorporating VirtualEdge into the family, though it maintains the VE designation for the pre-employment product line. Today, Agilent Technologies, Avery Dennison and Campbell Soup are still customers, joined by a host of others that bring the client count to some 230 with offices in 80 countries.

Product enhancement has come mostly from coupling ADP's payroll, data management and other services to the VirtualEdge product line. Good news for those - and there were many - who considered VirtualEdge fine just as it was.
